From the wide draw Rambling On can cross and set up a solid tempo. Ellerslie will host the Group 1 NZ Derby, and it will be part of a cracking day of 10 races, kicking off with an even BM75 mile. STEELY MAN (4) will be dropping back from a middle distance, and both of his career wins have been on this course. If the pace is genuine, then he can have the last say. YOUNG JACKSON (13) is an up-and-coming staying type from the James/Wellwood stable, and he really caught the eye with a late run for third at Te Rapa 4 weeks ago behind what could be the favourite for the NZ Derby later in the day. He has a better gate this time and can take this out, especially with 2kg less to carry. PEERLESS (1) capped off some improving form with an easy win at Matamata on a heavy track there 3 weeks ago. He might need similar track conditions, and if he gets them, he can figure in the top 3 again. ON THE TOWN (9) is heading the right way with her form, and he has winning form on this track. TOP SHELF (11) is also a top 4 chance. SUGGESTED PLAY: Young Jackson each way.
