MOMBETSU   16 Sep 2026

GOING:

Race 8 1000m

Track:

Koko Loa, Afro Kero and Copano Russell will not hold back as they vie for the lead from A Shin Skuld and Himalaya Noeti. KOKO LOA (5) is preferred despite a plain fifth over 1200m here last start, as her debut win at Mombetsu by three lengths showed the sharp 1000m profile she returns to now. The fact she was sent out an odds-on favourite that day adds weight to the view she has more to offer back in trip. AFRO KERO (6) brings the neatest recent record, winning here by a length after being beaten a nose the start prior, and her three-start record at this track and distance is hard to fault. SMART WAIN (1) also has a strong track-and-trip case after beating Baby Nonchan by four lengths, though the start prior was much weaker over 1200m. STAR OF VASE (3) drops back from a 2yo Open at Sapporo and has Mombetsu form, but must rebound after being unwanted in the market last time.
1 31461 SMART WAIN
TAKAHIRO MATSUMOTO
2YO  CHESTNUT  COLT 56.0KG

Scored well at Mombetsu last start, beating Baby Nonchan by four lengths after settling rearward and travelling sweetly into the turn. That was a sharp lift on his previous sixth over 1200m when beaten nine and a half lengths by Cream Pan at long odds. Two wins from three starts at this track and distance give the latest result substance, so he profiles as a genuine place chance with winning form in the right conditions.

BLACK, WHITE STAR, WHITE SLEEVES, BLACK STRIPE, White cap
2 42113 A SHIN SKULD
MASAKAZU MURAKAMI
2YO  CHESTNUT  FILLY 55.0KG

Kept finding when third over 1200m at Mombetsu last start, beaten three and a half lengths by Aperitivo after attracting some market support. She had won her previous run here by four lengths as favourite, and her overall record of two wins and three places from six starts reads well. Proven at this track and distance, but she still has to turn consistency into a stronger winning edge in this field.

GENTA OCHIAI
BLACK, YELLOW DIAMOND CHECKS, BLACK SLEEVES, YELLOW ARMBANDS, Black cap
3 24150 STAR OF VASE
NOBORU YONEKAWA
2YO  BROWN  COLT 56.0KG
Satoru Mitsuyasu
Found the 2yo Open at Sapporo too testing last start, finishing last and beaten seven and a half lengths by Blue Jay after never getting into the race. His prior fifth at Mombetsu over 1200m was more competitive, beaten just over four lengths by A Shin Ultrun. The class drop helps and he has one win and two places from five runs here, but the return to 1000m remains the key test.
3
SHOMA KANAYAMA
WHITE, GREEN CHECKS, WHITE SLEEVES, RED ARMBANDS, Red cap
4 216 COPANO RUSSELL
JUNJI TANAKA
2YO  CHESTNUT  COLT 56.0KG

Returns from a two-month break after finishing sixth at Mombetsu over 1200m, beaten four and a half lengths by A Shin Ultrun at big odds. He did pick up late and was not disgraced, but that followed a more convincing all-the-way win here when odds-on, beating Huakai Lewa by two lengths. Back to his winning distance is a plus, though he needs to reproduce that earlier sharpness to trouble these.
4
TAKAFUMI HATTORI
MEDIUM BLUE, YELLOW DIAMOND BAND, MAGENTA SLEEVES, Blue cap
5 15 KOKO LOA
HIDEKI KAKUGAWA
2YO  BROWN  FILLY 55.0KG

Failed to finish off over 1200m at Mombetsu last start, weakening into fifth and beaten just over seven lengths by Mad Secret after holding a commanding lead. The case is much stronger back in trip, with her debut win here by three lengths from Sobrina Forte coming as an odds-on favourite. Third-up now, she has the right setup to bounce back if that latest run was mainly a distance issue.
5
RYU ABE
MEDIUM BLUE, WHITE STARS, MEDIUM BLUE SLEEVES, JAZZBERRY JAM ARMBANDS, Yellow cap
6 221 AFRO KERO
KUNIAKI SASAKI
2YO  CHESTNUT  FILLY 55.0KG

Put a deserved win on the board at Mombetsu last start, beating Zindabad by a length after travelling like the winner and keeping on strongly. That followed a narrow second to Wakuwaku, beaten a nose, so there is little wrong with her current form. One win and two places from three starts at this track and distance underlines her reliability, making her a major winning chance again.
6
FUMA ONO
BLACK, LIGHT PINK DIABLO, BLACK SLEEVES, LIGHT PINK DOUBLE ARMBANDS, LIGHT PINK COLLAR, Green cap
7 1847 HIMALAYA NOETI
NOZOMI ONO
2YO  CHESTNUT  FILLY 55.0KG

Was safely held at Mombetsu last start, finishing seventh over 1200m and beaten over 11 lengths by Mad Secret after conceding a huge start. She had worked home from well back when fourth in a small field the run prior, but was still beaten eight lengths by Cyan Dio at big odds. The class drop and track win are positives, yet her recent margins leave her with plenty to find.
7
RYOGA FUJITA
YELLOW, BLUE RIGHT SASH, BLUE ARMBANDS, Orange cap
8 15930 MIYABI DIA
HIDEKI KAKUGAWA
2YO  CHESTNUT  COLT 56.0KG

Was never competitive and beaten out of sight at Mombetsu last start, which is difficult to overlook given he was near the top of an open market. His previous third behind Cyan Dio was better, but he led clearly and was still beaten four lengths in a small field. A track-and-trip record of one win and two places from three starts offers some hope, though recent form demands a major turnaround.
