GOING: S

Race 12 2000m

Track: SOFT

Genuine tempo from Alegranza leading Imono Soda Waride. FIRST MATE (7) gets the nod in a competitive B3 over 2000m at Ohi. He comes off a determined 1800m win here, beating Alegranza by half a length, and the prior third behind Transient reads well enough to make him the runner with the most reliable recent profile. SAN DIEGO (4) is the immediate threat after charging home to win a 3yo+ C1 by two lengths, with a prior third suggesting that improvement was no one-off. IMONO SODA WARIDE (13) has been consistent without winning this season, placing at both recent starts, and he already has a track-and-distance win to keep him firmly in calculations. WAXING MOON (11) was plain enough over 1400m last start but his previous 1800m win over Alegranza keeps him in the race.

Finished 11th at Ohi last start, beaten over 20 lengths after conceding a huge start and never getting into the race. The previous run was no better, with a seventh behind Transient when unwanted in the market and beaten out of sight. Even with a class drop noted, the rise to 2000m and a poor recent record leave him with a significant task.

Returns from a lengthy spell after closing last campaign with a second over 1600m at Ohi, beaten six lengths when near the top of betting. Her previous run was stronger, pipped by a neck over 1800m as favourite. Four wins and four places from eleven starts is a solid base, but she resumes at 2000m and profiles more as a dependable place chance than a clear top pick.

Worked home better than the result reads when sixth behind First Mate over 1800m at Ohi, beaten four and a half lengths at long odds. That was an improvement on his prior sixth behind Transient, where he had the job ahead and could not close the race off. The return to a winning distance helps, but he still has to find a sharper finishing effort.

Made a clear form leap at Ohi last start, winning a 3yo+ C1 by two lengths from Cool Breeze after charging home from well back. That followed a third behind Heykens over 1600m, beaten just under two lengths at big odds, so the recent pattern is genuine. Already a winner at this distance and Genki Fujimoto stays aboard, giving him a strong winning platform.

Resumed with a sound enough fifth behind First Mate over 1800m at Ohi, beaten four lengths after settling rearward, though the market wanted little to do with him. His previous run before the break was a heavy defeat when last behind Coconut Garden. Second-up improvement is possible, but the rise to 2000m asks another question of an ageing runner.

Was never a factor when 11th behind First Mate over 1800m at Ohi, beaten over 14 lengths at big odds after settling rearward. The start prior was even more concerning, finishing second last behind Transient and beaten a long way. Third-up fitness is some context, but his recent form and nine unplaced runs at Ohi make this difficult.

Produced the best recent reference in the field when winning over 1800m at Ohi, beating Alegranza by half a length after making up strong ground late. His third behind Transient two runs back was also solid, beaten just under two lengths at generous odds. A 2000m track-and-distance record of one win and two places from four starts strengthens the case, though the trip still carries a minor query.

Returns from a five-week freshening after being second last in a 3yo COND over 1800m at Ohi, well beaten by 22 lengths at long odds. He had earlier run fourth behind Cosmo Gigantea over the same trip, beaten five lengths, but remains winless from twelve starts. The class drop is not enough to offset the first-time 2000m concern.

Conceded a huge start when seventh behind First Mate over 1800m at Ohi, beaten just over five lengths after being unwanted in the market. The prior ninth behind Meisho Tabizuki over 1600m was weaker, beaten over 10 lengths at long odds. He has won at Ohi before, but his current form and 2000m query leave little room for confidence.

Nearly stole the prize at Ohi last start, finishing second to First Mate over 1800m and beaten half a length at big odds after being run down late. He had filled the same placing in a 3yo+ C1 behind Waxing Moon, beaten just over a length. Likely to use his natural speed again, but the 2000m test decides whether he is a genuine win hope or mainly a place play.

Was safely held over 1400m at Ohi last start, finishing fourth and beaten just under six lengths when well enough found in an open market. The better guide is his prior 3yo+ C1 win over 1800m, where he beat Alegranza by just over a length. Three wins and three places from seven Ohi starts give him a strong track profile, so the return to 2000m keeps him highly relevant.

Needs to rebound from a poor 12th behind First Mate over 1800m at Ohi, beaten over 17 lengths at big odds with no clear excuse. His fourth behind Transient two runs back was more competitive, beaten two lengths after working home evenly. Ten career wins command respect, but five unplaced runs at this track and distance temper the place case.

Returns from a two-month freshening in consistent form, having placed at Ohi in both recent runs. He was third to Nampasen over 1800m last start, beaten just under six lengths when near the top of betting, after a closer third behind Parmigianino. A track-and-distance win and a solid record with Takami Riku keep him firmly in the winning discussion, although converting chances remains the challenge.

Had every chance to show more when eighth behind First Mate over 1800m at Ohi, beaten five and a half lengths after being handy enough but failing to finish off. His prior fifth behind Transient was only fair, beaten four lengths after settling too far back to threaten. A small track-and-distance record reads well, but current form leaves him needing improvement.
