LORD SPENCER (2) has swept all before him over steeples this year, and he had a run around on the flat last time out over 3210m at New Plymouth. He was so tough when winning the Grand National Steeple at Riccarton over 5600m, the the step up to 6200m won't bother him. On top. SMUG (3) was too strong here 17 days ago over 4300m, and he is jumping so confidently lately. He will be chasing a hat-trick, and is the main threat to the top pick. BRUCIE (5) was well beaten by the second pick last start, but was a run short after having time to get over his prior effort for second behind the top pick at Riccarton. He will keep that pair honest in this. CHRISTMAS (8) is the interesting runner as he has trekked over from Australia after finishing fourth at Ballarat 5 weeks ago over 4500m. He stays all day, and is not here just for the scenery. SUGGESTED PLAY: Lord Spencer is the one to beat.
