Makdane has the pace to lead in what is likely to be a moderate tempo. No reason to jump off impressive last start winner SIMURGH (11) who justified heavy support at his second Australian start over this route, sitting midfield off a strong gallop and powering away over the final 200m to win well. Stays on 54kg given the slight rise in class but he can continue to improve and he draws for every hope. SKIPPERS CANYON (9) ironically (although not for those of us who backed him) settled closer last start at Flemington, hit the front and was bloused by the backmarker, a role he typically fills. Now to 2000m suits, if he can hold his spot from the low gate he's well placed. OCEANA DREAM (8) was unsuited staying at 1600m here last time when sent out favourite off a sharp win fresh. He'd run in a NZ Derby as a 3yo and can improve to this trip now. MAKDANE (5) won narrowly fresh and warrants respect. SUGGESTED PLAY: Simurgh to win again.
