A solid tempo is on the cards with Coral Impact and Fifty Calibre pushing for the lead ahead of Zamparini Spirit and Harrata. VELLASMACHINE (9) was specked at big odds on debut - $71 into $31 - and turned in a performance that would have given connections great heart for starts to come. Was beaten less than 3 lengths and the runner-up, who was beaten 1.5 lengths, won impressively at Sale on Thursday. It looks the right form and the step up to 1600m looks a plus. FIFTY CALIBRE (4) will be better for the debut run at Pakenham, when he probably wasn't able to get rolling as early as the jockey would have liked. HARRATA (5) beat him home that day, but the barriers here might reverse that result. CORAL IMPACT (3) was pretty good either side of a plain run at Flemington when outclassed, so only needs to repeat those efforts to be a chance. ZAMPARINI SPIRIT (10) showed good improvement last start and should be ready to peak. SUGGESTED PLAY: Vellasmachine to win.
