Expecting Pimpernel to lead Defying at just a moderate tempo. VIA VARALLO (6) progressed nicely last start at Goulburn when beaten by the barest of margins. Has taken a while to hit form but can open his account this time. DARN HOT MISS (11) never looked likely at the latest when turning a mile back but picked up strongly in the lane to grab fourth. Hitting her straps now fourth-up and will appreciate the added trip. Bold showing anticipated. PIMPERNEL (4) was better last start when finding one better over 1400m at Tumut, beaten only half a length. Finds a suitable race and can get the job done. DEFYING (2) warmed to his task nicely over the concluding stages last start at Tumut. Has a tricky draw to contest but gets a key booking in Owen. Don't dismiss easily. SUGGESTED PLAY: Siding with Via Varallo.
